I am obsessed with Shannon and Blair’s wedding day in Lansing, Iowa. They kicked off our fall wedding season with a wedding highlighted by stunning colors that felt both rustic and boho. I mean did you peep the sleeves for her ceremony look?!? And an unexpected bonus, I loved getting to spend the day surrounded by so many familiar faces.

Thinking about getting married in Lansing, Iowa?
Lansing doesn’t always make the first round of venue searches for couples in this region, and I think that’s a missed opportunity. Tucked into the bluffs along the Mississippi River in the far northeast corner of Iowa, it’s one of the most naturally beautiful small towns in the Driftless area — and it’s significantly less crowded than some of the more searched venues across the river in Wisconsin.
If you’re considering it, here’s what I’d want you to know.
The setting
Lansing sits right where the bluffs meet the Mississippi, which means the landscape does a lot of heavy lifting for you from a visual standpoint. Whether you’re shooting portraits in town, down by the river, or up in the bluffs above it — the backdrops are genuinely stunning, especially in fall when the color is at its peak. There’s a reason couples from across the region make the drive for it.
TJ Hunter’s Banquet Hall
Blair and Shannon celebrated at TJ Hunter’s Banquet Hall, which is a local institution in Lansing with a comfortable, unpretentious feel that suits a community-rooted wedding perfectly. It’s the kind of space that fills up with warmth quickly and lets the people in the room be the focal point — exactly as it should be.
What it’s like to photograph in Lansing
As a northeast Iowa photographer, Lansing is one of my favorite areas to work in. The combination of river light, bluff landscapes, and small-town character gives you something genuinely different from a farm venue or a ballroom. If you’re getting married in the fall especially — the color alone is worth building your date around.
